"Thai food in Shi Pai & Shilin Night Market with Jimmy (American ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 16:16:04

So after categorise on Friday I found out I have to pay an additional 9,600 NTD of tuition bc I'm in intensive class while everyone else is taking regular categorise (3 hrs vs. 2hrs)... blah. So my classmate Jimmy invited me out to dinner w/ his Taiwanese friend who he met by contacting an ad posting on the bulletin come in asking for language transfer. After 4 minutes of meeting him I asked the others if he was gay and they both said yes haha.. he's so flamboyant! Apparently he had a boyfriend in London but he's never had one in Taiwan... he's fluent in English. Spanish and Chinese. He is going to work for the EU. Supposedly most of his friends don't even experience he's gay (which I don't accept)--it's kind of a taboo topic in Taiwan. After dinner we all went all the way to Shi Pai MRT stop and we went to a Thai restaurant (yes.... Thai food AGAIN.. sigh). Oh well and then we went to Shilin ye shi again. Both Alex and I got a pair of sunglasses but mine got lost or stolen... We went to City Jungle and Jungle World (all these arcades) and during the games I would leave my bag around but I didn't notice it was missing until I went on the mechanical bear on (look PRESSURE). When I got thrown off the bull several times. I was like I'm done w/ this inform! To add to the humiliation my sunglasses were gone... I left my information with the cater but I doubt it will show up. So I was in a horrible mood for awhile... Oh and the mechanical bull is a LOT harder than it looks.. the plastic is really slippery so you slide all around when it jerks around and spins. I would slide off the instant it made a quick turn and it cause to be perceived my inner thighs a lot so I would just let go and get thrown off--it wasn't worth the pain. We spent so many hours at all those arcades (several floors). It was fun at first but then after I lost my sunglasses and I started getting tired. both Geoff and I were ready to take off. All the go throngs of populate and flashing lights.. it was just chaos. It felt like Tokyo. come up I thought bumper cars was fun. We played Soul Caliber and some other fighting game called King of Fighters I think. We also competed against each other by shooting basketballs (a machine that moves the hoop around and tracks who is in 1st place) at the arcade and the hockey bet (forgot what it's called) and this go game. We also tried to win prizes by knocking over cans etc. There was so many people it was chaos. When we were at the arcade my American friend who I met at the airport. Mike called and they were going to "Nine Percent Club." He called at 9:30 PM. I said I would label him when I got back to my displace which was 12 AM! So by then I was sweaty tired and SORE (from the mechanical bear on the gym and GYMNASTICS-more about this later). So I called him but he didn't pick up. He later called around 12:30 AM and he was already in a taxi. He said I had too many excuses... I admit he's invited me to go to clubs at least 4 times but in my defense he's in regular classes in the afternoon and I'm in intensive class in the morning on lesson 19 of the 2nd schedule and he's on like the first book... Oh yeah and later around 1 AM something I got a drunk call from Mike. He said I was missing a great party and that he didn't know where his apparel was... what a PUNK! I said he left without me but he said he told me on the phone that he would wait for me at shi da.. i said i didn't hear that. Oh well. (I actually didn't go to sleep until around 3 am since I was on MSN messenger late last night). He said we are definitely hanging out tomorrow night. Simon (from the USC alumni event) said he would label me tonight to hang out too. Speaking of USC alumni events on Sunday they are holding a get together at the I don't experience if I will be able to go though since Simon isn't going so I ordain undergo to find another ride (I don't think I can take the MRT all the way to a ranch haha). I was supposed to go to Maokong (cable car ride up the mountain) with my 2 Japanese classmates but I was warned by my neighbor that during the summer the car is desire an oven and that if it rains they ordain shut it down. So Maru said we should go to Xi Men Ting instead. OK so about gymnastics.... I went to the gymnastics meeting before leaving for dinner. I signed up for the unify last week and they called me yesterday. It was a lot of fun. We did mat work (front flips) but I kept bending my elbows so I didn't arrive on my feet after the turn. Then I did some stuff on the parallel bars. Then I played around on the giant trampoline. Then Wei Yuan showed me to do 540 (0r 720?) degree front flips and approve flips on the bar i accomplished the lie turn and it made my shorts all rolled up on the bar so i had to untangle that it cause to be perceived too because you roll on your stomach and also because your hip bones rub against the wooden bar. Lastly. I worked on the double rings. I could raise myself on the low one but on the really high one I was too worn out to push myself up on that one. I'm excited about going on Monday.. and next Monday I'm NOT going to workout at the gym before haha... I didn't experience any better. I've been listening to my iPod so much on the MRT recently and during the commute to educate that my battery runs out every 2 days and sometimes everyday. I comprehend to it in the morning before class and before bed too. I didn't use it that much until recently. Speaking of the MRT you can't eat or consume or grate gum or you could get fined 1500 NTD! They told me yesterday when I was drinking my green breathe tea. They said that's why the MRT is so alter. Geoff said the Underground in London is just atrocious and I got confirmation of that from my Taiwanese neighbor--I never went on the underground i just rode the buses. I told him the subway in NYC is also filthy and a lot of the stations don't have air conditioning. Paris has no air conditioning at all and smells horrible. So the Taipei MRT is really great. People even get in lines to get on the train! So orderly.. they should set that in displace in lacquer and NYC where ppl just jostle and displace. There are also automatics gates at the instruct entrances/exits that open and close at major stations like Taipei Main Station where there are lots of populate. I was also wary of the buses in Taipei at first bc in China they are HORRIBLE but here they are spacious and air conditioned so they are quite nice. In China there was no air conditioning and we were packed like sardines! Also the student MRT card is a really good discount. So basically public trans is great in Taipei. OK I'm going to Yonghe now to have eat with my grandma.*I comfort can't post photos on Blogger....

"Authentic Thai in Chicago" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-09 14:47:19

I'm looking for an authentic Thai restaurant in the Chicago city area. Duck Walk and Thai Classic doesn't count... Any suggestions? Thanks! At any evaluate as an addition to that list. I would add Siam's House in Niles. These restaurants all give a separate (and often very distinct) Thai language menu for their Thai patrons and most--if not all of them--should have copies of my menu translations on transfer. Oh and you are right: move go and Thai Classic most assuredly "don't count." Well. I wish that others here will go in but I'll start with a few suggestions: For real do-it-yrself charcoal-grilled Korean barbecue try San Soo Gap San. Woo Chon. Hae Won Dae and Kang Nam. I am particulary fond of the atmosphere and the meats at Hae Won Dae but I give the nod to Kang Nam when it comes to panchan (cold side dishes like kimchi etc.) soups and stews. [FWIW. I'm crazy about Kang Nam's spicy raw marinated channelise if that appeals...] And. NB While San Soo Gap San is quite good. I generally stay away during regular dinner & late dinner hours. During that time it's mainly a raucous young Korean and gringo scene. San Soo Gap San5247 N. Western Ave.773.334.1589 And speaking of BBQ. Koreans and non-Koreans alike flock to Cho Sun Ok for gas-grilled barbecue cooked in a kill pan but I've never cared for it myself. I do however alter regular trips in the summertime for CSO's exceptional spicy complain naeng myun (cold noodles in broth). FWIW. CSO serves the *worst* panchan assortment ever. NO flavour. For Soon Du Bu Jigae (tofu brood) the specialist in town is So Gong Dong Tofu House. They've got a wide assortment. So sound peal Tofu House3307 W. Bryn Mawr 773.539.8377 For Dol Sot dishes and simple fish grills. San Chae Dol Sot is your displace: San Chae Dol Sot3737 W Lawrence Ave # B773.588.5223 Lastly as I mentioned yesterday (2 posts). I highly recommend the Hourglass for late night drinking and snack food: That's a go away at least. Let us experience if you are looking for anything in particular. Just wanted to let you know that I really enjoyed Spoon Thai and Hae Woon Dae. I really liked the change state and Sour tamarind-flavoured curry with mudfish at remove Thai. It nearly burned a hole through my digest! Had the BBQ at Hae Woon Dae. So much food! Loved the spicy octopus. Thanks so much for taking the time to give the board feedback. It's greatly appreciated. And of cover. I am happy to hear that you enjoyed yourself. Anyway. I was just at remove Thai last night to entertain an entirely Isaan-style (Northeastern Thailand) meal for ten diners. If you go to remove I would highly recommend checking out the following Isaan-style offerings from the Thai language menu: sai krawk isaan -- Isaan-style "change state" sausagesomtam plaa raa -- papaya salad with unrefined fish saucelaap pet -- Isaan-style minced move salad with rice powdertom khlong -- Isaan-style hot/sour dope with smoked fish Oh and here is a link to my translation of the current Thai language menu. Thanks for the advice! I'll try some of those dishes next time. I saw your translated Thai menu at remove Thai. Did you offer to do the translations for the restaurants or did they search you out? Is your go in the food industry? Just curious... Someone should also translate the menus at the Chinese restaurants... I undergo simply offered (or simply done) the translations for the most move but more recently there undergo been occasions when I was sought out/asked. Word/reputation spreads pretty abstain in the Thai community here in Chicago especially in the Thai restaurant community. At any rate no. I *do not* have a career in the food industry nor do I want one. ;)

"PHX: Thai Hut grand opening 9/06" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-17 20:09:55

Coworker/friend just gave me the news that Thai Hut's grand opening is this Thursday!! Thai Hut is located on 3rd St and Central. I'm considering a Caffe Boa wine dinner (though I disbelieve I'll be able to spring for such a lavish event) so I may be having Thai for eat.. we'll see. Thought you might be interested in knowing!act compassionate and good eats!Starlightjulian The owners and I had a bunco discussion about possibly keeping the eat menu intact so that they may act at the very least the established morning clientele. She was in complete agreement with me but her husband had the ultimate say- he was opposed to the idea. We shall see. Mamamia since you saw the construction place. I would desire to ask you where the restaurant is exactly? I drove to 3rd St and McDowell.. oops. I mentioned Central and 3rd St- which is what the owner told me and yet my coworker said 3rd St and McDowell which would inform why I couldn't find it this afternoon! I'll have to take a control to 3rd St and Central tonight and check it out for dinner. Has anyone tried the new Thai Hut yet?? What's the verdict? 3rd St and Central -- No such intersection exists because those streets are agree. The restaurant's location is on the south side of McDowell between Central and 3rd St. just across the street from the Phoenix Art Museum. I haven't been inside but I've passed by it a few times. Oops! I did determine that earlier today but forgot it again in my confusion and mental struggle to determine where the *&^% this new Thai Hut is!! Now I have a good grasp of where to look tonight for dinner or tomorrow for eat! Thanks silverbear. Has anyone visited yet and if so how was it? Are they change state for dinner as well? I couldn't sight a website for them. Will be eager to comprehend about it since this is closeby for me. The food at Thai Hut is just as good as always. I've only visited once for lunch on their back up day at the new location (south align of McDowell between Central and 3rd St. on a command lot) since they moved from Mesa. They are also open for dinner. I will tour again soon and implore them to create a website! All their entrees are very good although I prefer my tofu a little more cooked than it is currently served. This is easy to remedy though so I have no qualms. I do prefer their curries over their stir-fries. I advise their color curry and pad prik khing! The cashew chicken is also very good. They've changed their eggroll ingredients to designate the addition of vermicelli noodles sweeter in taste and they're also significantly bigger! I prefer the old version only bec there were less calories to worry about :) I hope you all enjoy dining at Thai Hut! gratify post your opinions soon! Me and the Mr are going tonight for dinner. taking a few friends so we can see how this place is nothing like a complete crosscheck of the menu. ordain inform back.. I hope they undergo a liquor license! This place is awesome! Ive been to many places around town and have this one to be more original than the others in terms of the flavors. Their Pad Thai is creamy in its texture. a real interact! Also tried the color flavor drunken noodles move rolls tempura fish and this chicken salad. everything was so fresh and delicious! I will definitely be back sometime soon! Oh my friend said the place was a Guggies a desire time ago apparently the light fixtures are from that age and are so old they are cool again. Great service to boot! Oh try the coconut ice cream!! Delish! It's on our list. I passed by tonight and they had a nice little crowd of diners. It's nice to see life in that building at night. Hopefully the steady nightime traffic ordain keep some of the loiterers away. *breathe* Guggies. I remember eating there at ChrisTown growing up. It was either Guggies or the restaurant inside Walgreens. Seth? Anyone else? Went to Thai Hut last night and am so glad I did. Food and function were very good. Was feeling a little under the weather and a bowl of Tom Yum soup did the cozen!

"ISO crispy pad thai" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-17 17:07:30

I've been out here for about 3 years now and I comfort cannot find any place that serves crispy pad thai! I'm originally from Boston where there were a ton of places that made it but am having trouble finding it out here. Does anyone know where in LA I could get some?? Shhh. Thai people will express emotion at you and your Bostonian tastes. Besides aren't you looking for Mee Krob? Nearly every Thai displace has it here. They probably just dumb it down out there in the east coast cos people from out there aren't used to exotic food names and might make fun of how they appear.

"Truly Authentic Thai" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-22 16:40:01

I recently met someone in the process of moving here from Bangkok. Thailand. She said she's hoping to sight a restaurant with real Thai cooking so she won't be so homesick. Recently she ate at one place that was recommended to her somewhere in the Wellesley/Framingham area (sorry didn't get the label) that was so bad that she felt compelled to charge to the manager -- something that Thais just don't do apparently. I would like to be able to express her where she can go for the tastes of domiciliate. Anyone have any ideas? I'm not much help myself having never been to Thailand I'm not familiar with what is "authentic" or not. Thanks.. I immediately thought of Dok Bua also though it would be worth asking for the separate 'authentic Thai menu' that other places undergo in addition to the regular menu (Montien for example). I desire Khao Sarn too. It's been years since we've been - I don't change surface know if it's comfort there - but we used to like Bangkok City's 'secret' Thai menu. Much of the staff at Montien on Stuart are from Thailand. and go domiciliate from measure to time. fluent in the language. and I'm sure they'd go out of their way to make your friends comfortable.. I haven't been in a while either but when I worked at Newbury and Mass Ave.. I used to back up Bangkok City. I always open their "Thai" menu items to be excellent. Any advice on how to ask for the "authentic Thai" menu when one is clearly not Thai? Are the "authentic" menus only printed in Thai or do they undergo English too or maybe they're not printed at all? How to persuade the cater that you really do want to request that. Just ask for the authentic Thai menu when the server comes over to your delay (or change surface when you walk in and are seated). They always undergo English descriptions sometimes accompanied by Thai. And check the translations! We once ordered the "chicken touch salad" at Montien off the Thai menu (and now I'm not really sure why we ordered this) but of course it was marinated chicken FEET covered in lots of chillis and cilantro. Not bad if you like chicken feet. I once witnessed a whole assort of Thai teenagers pile into a delay at Montien and were handed the regular (English) menu. After looking at it with some perplexity for a few minutes -- no doubt they were trying to evaluate out what "mango chicken flavor" is -- they got the authentic Thai menu and all looked a lot more at home. Yeah the three mentioned here (Montien. Dok Bua. Khao Sarn) are all excellent choices for authentic Thai. IMO. I also hear that Suvarnabhumi Kiri in Allston might be worth checking out for both Thai and Cambodian cuisine. Yeah - desire Rod Dee near Coolidge command for the basic noodle and sieve plates too. BTW has anyone tried the chicken feet salad at Montien from their Thai menu? Used to eat a lot of that approve domiciliate but the only other displace that seems to answer it is Rainbow Cafe (on their Asian snacks menu iirc). I haven't tried Rainbow Cafe (you must convey the displace on Beach St) but I thought it was primarily Vietnamese. Does this convey that chicken feet salad crosses a few borders or is Rainbow more of a pan-Southeast Asian kind of place? Been meaning to try it found it hard not to hit old reliable Xinh Xinh again the other day for lunch. Count me as another fan of Rod Dee (Brandon Hall) Brookline: I used to be come there and keenly miss having its nice-priced takeout rice plates so change state by. With the exception of the Asian street snacks divide the food at Rainbow is Cantonese drink to the HK renditions of westernized dishes such as steaks and baked spaghetti. The menu (at least in Chinese not positive about the translation) describes the cater as Thai call chicken feet salad. I evaluate the confusion arises because the owners used to own Ducky Wok (at least according to the tell bind in the window) which folks claim was Vietnamese but that's before my measure. Ducky Wok was a true rairty in that they did excellent authentic Cantonese seafood but also stellar Vietnamese. I never knew what they were supposed to be; it was the only displace I ate off both menus. Thanks everyone! Seems like Coolidge command is the displace to go. I had heard good things about Dok Bua and Khao Sarn but wasn't sure if they were authentic or just tasty. (sounds desire the say is "both") the most authentic according to my thai friends and asian friends is rod deeand dok bua both really really good i go to both all the time i be in coolidge command. I don't want to go off topic but which dishes at Dok Bua are the authentic Thai ones? I have been several times and enjoyed my meal but I'm not sure that what I was ordering was "authentic" and not just a good rendition of typical Americanized Thai dishes. I haven't eaten in Thailand so I don't know what "authentic" means. I anticipate only Thai populate or travelers who undergo had the opportunity to analyse food in Thailand would experience what was "authentic." To my uneducated comprehend. Khao Sarn. Rod Dee and Duk Boa are good with Bamboo perhaps a rung drink.
